How do you read the producer price index for wood products?

← Public timber and lumber data

As an index of what domestic producers receive, net, for a defined product, relative to a base period. It is not a price, and not what a buyer pays. Tariffs paid are excluded. Producers' price responses to tariffs are included. The latest months are provisional, and seasonally adjusted series are recalculated for years. And the wood series come in two families, commodity and industry, with different base periods. Read with those points in mind, it is useful for contract escalators, cost tracking and market context.

What the usual answer says

The top results for this question are the data pages themselves: series for lumber, hardwood lumber, plywood, pallets and other wood products, each a line on a chart. They say what the series is called and when it was updated. They don't say how to read it.

Which points on a producer price index chart can still change Unadjusted Used for escalators Last four months provisional five updates, then final Seasonally adjusted Recalculated each year, going back 5 years Bases differ, so compare percentage changes Lumber is set at 1982=100; logs and timber at December 2011=100. The levels cannot be compared.

What it measures, and how tariffs enter

The statistical agency's Handbook of Methods says that "For industries in sectors other than wholesale and retail trade", which includes wood products, the price behind the index is "the net revenue accruing to a specified producing establishment from a specified kind of buyer for a specified product shipped, or service provided, under specified transaction terms on a specified day of the month".

On tariffs, it says "government-imposed tariffs, like excise taxes, are not retained by producers as revenue, they are explicitly excluded from the PPI". It goes on: "However, pricing decisions producers make in reaction to tariffs would be included." A duty on imported lumber can therefore move the index, if domestic producers raise their own prices in response. What the index never shows is the duty itself, or the price of the imported stock, which is a foreign producer's price. A dealer's cost of imported lumber and the index can move by different amounts at different times. Watch both.

Which series

The wood products indexes include commodity series for lumber, softwood lumber, hardwood lumber, plywood, and logs, bolts, timber, pulpwood and wood chips, and industry series for wood product manufacturing. An industry index measures "changes in prices received for the industry's output sold outside the industry"; the commodity structure groups products "by similarity of end use, material composition, or service type". For a lumber escalator, the commodity series for the product sold is usually the match.

Bases differ. The lumber series is set at 1982=100 and stood at 286.633 in August 2026. The logs and timber series is set at December 2011=100 and stood at 110.615 in the same month. The levels can't be compared; only the percentage changes can.

Provisional months

The handbook's notes on presentation say that, from November 2021, indexes "undergo five iterative updates from first issuance through final posting". Unadjusted indexes are final four months after first release. The notes add that "subsequent revisions normally are minor, especially at more highly aggregated grouping levels". Seasonally adjusted indexes are different: they "are recalculated on an annual basis going back 5 years". So a chart's last four points are provisional, and an adjusted series can shift years back.

Escalators

The handbook is direct about which data suits contracts: "The unadjusted versions of PPI data are of primary interest to those who need information that can be more readily related to the dollar values of transactions, such as those using the PPI for contract price adjustment purposes". The agency also publishes a Price Adjustment Guide for Contracting Parties. A contract that escalates on the index should name the series. It should also say whether it uses the first release or the final one, since the two can differ. The central bank's vintage archive keeps every published version of each series, which settles disputes about what the index said on a given date. Duties on imports belong in a separate clause.

A first check

Pick the series that matches what the business buys or sells, and set a year of its own purchase or sales prices beside it as percentage changes from the same month. If the two move together, the index can carry an escalator. If they diverge, find out why before relying on it: a product mix the series doesn't cover, a region, or import costs.

When it doesn't apply

Many lumber buyers and sellers price off weekly commercial reports, which move weeks earlier; for them the index is background and escalation clauses are rare. Products without their own series fall into broader groups that may not track them closely. And the index is national, so regional price differences are invisible in it.
